Nacre, also known as mother of pearl, is a blend of minerals that are secreated by oysters and other mollusks and deposited inside their shells. Mother of pearl is from the iridescent lining of the shell where the pearl grew up. It gets it's name form two Latin words that mean sea of water. To clean your pearls simply take a damp cloth with mild soap and water. Do not submerge your pearls in water to soak. Never clean your pearls with solutions that contain ammonia or harsh chemicals. Periodically have your pearls restrung this will insure the nylon or silk holding them together is in good shape. You should never store your pearls with other jewelery as other pieces can scratch your pearls. Have a special place for your pearls or keep them in a chamois bag.
